Santa Barbara locals may remember us as Paddle Sports of Santa Barbara, selling kayaks and gear, renting kayaks, and guiding trips on the islands. In 2010 the current owner Mark Hyatt relinquished ownership to three of his employees, Garrett Kababik, Fraser Kersey, and Johnny Dresser (all island guides at the time), who collectively established Channel Islands Outfitters. Upon realizing that a revised and modern plan needed to be realized to carry Paddle Sports into the new economy, the three island guides got to work brainstorming.

Clyde Beatty Jr. is known for his surfing, shaping and his glassing, in fact Clyde is considered to one o f the first to use epoxy resins on surfboards. When it came to glassing Clyde Beatty was on the creative edge. Clyde first learned how to surf in 1964 at California Street in Ventura. He was in the fifth grade at the time. His first surfboard was a Duke Kahanamoku pop-out made in Ventura, his parents bought it for him. While going to University High School in Pacific Palisades during the latter part of the 60’s Clyde was a team rider for the Hobie / Blue Cheer surf shop in Santa Monica. Mike Perry was the shaper at Blue Cheer and had an influence in Clyde’s shaping. Clyde learned by watching Mike shape a lot of boards including the ones he rode for Blue Cheer. The Blue Cheer factory is where Clyde learned to shape and glass. Being around Mike Perry, and watching glassers like Wayne Miyata gloss and pin line and Bob Petty laminating. Bob was the man who could power when it came to laminating. Clyde’s first board that he shaped was also air brushed by him, using a spray enamel can. While learning the ropes in board manufacturing, Clyde was a 4A surfer the equivalent of an ASP pro.

Cape Cod native Jason Feist was a product of the ’80’s surf resurgence. He got his 1st board at age 10 and learned to surf alongside the Sullivan and Zavorskas Brothers, Matt Richards, Brendan McCray, Steve Esterbrook, Seb Frawley, Tripp Taylor and many more. After graduating Nauset High School in 1991 he moved to California and began shaping in 1997. Fast forward to the present. Now he has a shop and shaping room in downtown Santa Barbara and if you paddle out at any of the point breaks in the Santa Barbara area, you’ll see that most of the best surfers in the water are riding J7s.

Dave Johnson is one of the lucky ones, who gets to do what he loves and get paid for it. The UCSB graduate’s chosen profession is operating Progressive Surfboards, a big wave’s break from Hollister and South Fairview, his business since 1975.

Since then, he’s been fortunate to have chased beach breaks and point breaks all over the Good Land, in between reincarnations of the popular retail and custom surfboard shop.

Surf n Wear’s The Beach House has been serving the spirit and romance of surfing since 1962. The shop first opened in Summerland, CA just four miles from The Queen of the Coast, Rincon Point. Needless to say, the shop was closed when the surf was up. Over 50 years later we’re still serving the same surfers and their families, although we don’t close for waves these days.
