In August 2012, Trails Council and the City of Goleta agreed to a memo of undrstanding for the design, engineering and permitting of the Coastal Trails and Restoration Project in the Ellwood Open Space/Sperling Preserve area.

The Ellwood Mesa Coastal Trails and Habitat Restoration Project will improve approximately 2.1 miles of the CA Coastal Trail and historic De Anza Trail. The project includes improvements to the trails, gully and creek crossings, two beach access points and habitat restoration along the trail corridors and coastal blufftop. Funds for the initial study and environmental review were provided by a $100,000 grant from the CA Coastal Conservancy and a $50,000 grant from the Goleta Valley Land Trust.

It is anticipated that the permitting phase will be completed in the Spring of 2014.
